The Government of India has approved the rollover of an INR 30 billion (about USD 319 million) currency swap facility extended to the Maldives through the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the High Commission of India said in a statement on 16 October 2026, The Edition reported. The High Commission said the rollover falls under the Framework on Currency Swap Arrangements for SAARC Countries.

The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) first drew on the facility on 23 April 2026, and the rollover takes effect on 23 October. It runs for three months; earlier swap rollovers ran for six months. The arrangement was agreed in October 2024, when India committed USD 400 million and INR 30 billion. The USD 400 million swap was repaid earlier this year, and the High Commission said Treasury bills subscribed by India have been settled.

State reserves stood at USD 547 million at the end of September, The Edition reported. The swap serves as a short-term facility to support reserves. The Press Trust of India also reported the approval (opens in a new tab).

Malé City Council has passed a resolution to challenge in court the government's decision to take 14 plots under the council's jurisdiction, Mihaaru reported on 16 October 2026. The Housing Ministry notified the council of the decision. The council considers the decision to be unlawful, according to the report.

The plots are in Malé and Vilimalé and include Sultan Park, Rasfannu and the fish market. The transfer is being made under the amended Decentralisation Act. The reports reviewed did not state the number of council members who voted for the resolution, the specific legal grounds the council will present, or when the case will be filed.

Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid, who has announced that he will contest the party's presidential primary, said the transfer is intended to restrict the opposition party's political activities in the capital, Atoll Times reported (opens in a new tab). He said similar measures could be extended to other parts of the country.

Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan said on 16 October 2026 that the Rasmalé project will not compromise the sovereignty or security of the Maldives, The Edition reported. At a press conference at the President's Office, he asked the public not to spread false information about the project that could lead to civil unrest.

The minister said the sovereign authority of the state will apply across the whole area and that Maldivian law enforcement will hold full legal authority there. Police will act on Rasmalé as they would anywhere else when their legal duties require it. He was responding to a social media post that objected to the security staff of Eagle Hills Chairman Mohamed Alabbar operating outside Maldivian authority. He noted that more than 200 islands have been awarded for tourism, agriculture and industry, all of them under government security.

The government has awarded 500 hectares of Rasmalé land, where Fushidhiggaru Falhu is being reclaimed, to Abu Dhabi-based Eagle Hills. The government says 5,000 housing units, valued at about USD 500 million, will be handed to the state in advance. The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party has raised concerns about the agreement.

Two Maldivian pilots who were detained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in connection with the 30 September incident on flydubai flight FZ1073 have returned to the Maldives, The Edition reported on 16 October 2026. A Maldives Police Service official said police are examining the matter. The pilots were not arrested on their return.

Both men work as flydubai co-pilots. According to The Edition, they lived in the same apartment complex as the Omani co-pilot, Hamam Al Hammami, who is alleged to have attacked the pilot of the flight from Dubai to Israel. How the two Maldivians may be connected to the incident has not been made clear. Atoll Times (opens in a new tab) reported that the two were deported and questioned.

The flight carried 182 passengers. After the attack, crew and passengers restrained the co-pilot, and the aircraft made an emergency landing at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of Maldives, called for innovative, sustainable and resilient food systems that provide safe, nutritious and affordable food, in a statement on his official social media channels to mark World Food Day on 16 October 2026, the President's Office said. This year's theme is "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow."

The President listed measures in the fisheries sector: payment to fishers within 48 hours, expanded fish storage and processing infrastructure, and further measures to support the industry. In agriculture, he cited projects established on several islands under public-private partnerships, and encouraged communities to make more effective use of available land. The government says it is working to strengthen local food supply chains, improve market access for farmers and fishers, and attract more investment in agriculture.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, in a post on her official X account, called for reducing waste, supporting local produce and adopting sustainable practices at home. World Food Day also marks the founding of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The President's National Farmers' Day statement (opens in a new tab) on 15 October addressed food security and sovereignty.
