How to read this series

Expenditure and balance. What the government spends: recurrent spending (salaries, pensions, subsidies, interest and running costs) and capital spending (buildings, infrastructure, equipment). The overall balance is revenue minus this total; a negative figure is a deficit that has to be borrowed.

  • Shown in current prices (nominal). Part of any long-run rise reflects inflation rather than a larger real amount.
  • A flow: it measures activity during each month, and months add up to an annual total.
  • Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.

Terms such as percentage points, flows and stocks, and trend growth are explained in How to read the tracker.
