What the numbers say

Short term

The latest readings
  • The latest figure is MVR 48.9 million for Jul 2026, down 7.8% on the same month a year earlier.
  • In the first 7 months of 2026 the total was MVR 379.4 million, up 4.2% on the same stretch of 2025.
  • Over the latest 12 months it came to MVR 806.8 million, up 19.9% on the 12 months before.
  • The change on a year earlier averaged +59.8% over the last three months, against −7.5% in the three months before: the year-on-year change has turned positive.

Long term

The record as a whole
  • Trend growth over the past 8 years is 11.6% a year (least-squares fit on the logarithm; R² 0.66, a moderate fit, with sizeable swings around the path).
  • Measured end to end, compound growth is 8.2% a year over five years, on 12-month totals.
  • The record high (12-month total) was MVR 1.27 billion in the year to Jun 2025; the latest is 36.7% below it.
  • The past five years include an exceptional swing in the annual growth rate, so no typical range is quoted.
  • There is a regular seasonal pattern: over the last 5 full years the high point has been December and the low point January. Compare each month with the same one a year earlier, not with the one before.

How to read this series

Expenditure and balance. What the government spends: recurrent spending (salaries, pensions, subsidies, interest and running costs) and capital spending (buildings, infrastructure, equipment). The overall balance is revenue minus this total; a negative figure is a deficit that has to be borrowed.

  • Shown in current prices (nominal). Part of any long-run rise reflects inflation rather than a larger real amount.
  • A flow: it measures activity during each month, and months add up to an annual total.
  • Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.

Terms such as percentage points, flows and stocks, and trend growth are explained in How to read the tracker.
