What the numbers say
Short term
The latest readings- The latest figure is MVR 3.36 billion for Jul 2021, up 20% on the same month a year earlier.
- In the first 7 months of 2021 the total was MVR 29.31 billion, up 21.8% on the same stretch of 2020.
- Over the latest 12 months it came to MVR 53.65 billion, up 33.7% on the 12 months before.
- The change on a year earlier averaged +24.3% over the last three months, against +39.0% in the three months before: the year-on-year pace has eased.
- No figure has been published for any period after Jul 2021, so this may be a discontinued or long-delayed series.
Long term
The record as a whole- Trend growth over the past 10 years is 3.7% a year (least-squares fit on the logarithm; R² 0.19, a loose fit: the series has not followed a steady path, and this rate says little).
- Measured end to end, compound growth is 13.4% a year over five years and 11.6% a year over ten, on 12-month totals.
- The record high (12-month total) was MVR 54.79 billion in the year to May 2021; the latest is 2.1% below it.
- Year-on-year growth has typically varied by about 40.4 percentage points (one standard deviation) over the past five years.
- There is a regular seasonal pattern: over the last 5 full years the high point has been August and the low point July. Compare each month with the same one a year earlier, not with the one before.
How to read this series
Domestic borrowing. Who holds the government’s domestic debt, and the treasury bills issued, repaid and outstanding each month. Treasury bills are short-term borrowing that must be rolled over, so the outstanding amount and its maturity mix show how much refinancing is always due.
- Shown in current prices (nominal). Part of any long-run rise reflects inflation rather than a larger real amount.
- A flow: it measures activity during each month, and months add up to an annual total.
- Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.
