What the numbers say

Short term

The latest readings
  • The latest figure is 68,506 beds for Aug 2026, up 0.3% from Jul 2026 and up 4.6% on the same month a year earlier.
  • The change on a year earlier averaged +5.1% over the last three months, against +6.0% in the three months before: the year-on-year pace is broadly unchanged.

Long term

The record as a whole
  • Trend growth over the past 10 years is 8.2% a year (least-squares fit on the logarithm; R² 0.22, a loose fit: the series has not followed a steady path, and this rate says little).
  • Measured end to end, compound growth is 6.3% a year over five years and 7.3% a year over ten.
  • The latest figure is the highest on record.
  • Year-on-year growth has typically varied by about 15.6 percentage points (one standard deviation) over the past five years.

How to read this series

Capacity and stay. How long visitors stay and how full the beds are. Bednights are arrivals multiplied by length of stay; the occupancy rate is bednights as a share of the bed capacity in operation. Arrivals can rise while bednights lag if stays get shorter. Travel receipts are what visitors spend, in US dollars.

  • Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.

Terms such as percentage points, flows and stocks, and trend growth are explained in How to read the tracker.
