What the numbers say

Short term

The latest readings
  • The latest figure is MVR 42.92 billion for Aug 2026, up 2.3% from Jul 2026 and up 17.4% on the same month a year earlier.
  • The change on a year earlier averaged +16.5% over the last three months, against +14.9% in the three months before: the year-on-year pace has picked up.
  • That annual change is unusual by the standard of the past ten years: 2.4 standard deviations above the average.

Long term

The record as a whole
  • Trend growth over the past 10 years is 7.7% a year (least-squares fit on the logarithm; R² 0.98, a close fit, so the series has followed a steady path).
  • Measured end to end, compound growth is 8.5% a year over five years and 8.9% a year over ten.
  • The latest figure is the highest on record.
  • Year-on-year growth has typically varied by about 4.4 percentage points (one standard deviation) over the past five years.

How to read this series

Sources of money. The other side of the banking system’s balance sheet: what broad money is backed by. Net foreign assets are foreign-currency holdings less foreign liabilities; net domestic assets are mainly lending to the government and to the private sector. Rising claims on government mean the banking system is financing more of the deficit.

  • Shown in current prices (nominal). Part of any long-run rise reflects inflation rather than a larger real amount.
  • A stock: it is the amount outstanding at the end of each month, not activity during it, so periods are never added together.
  • Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.

Terms such as percentage points, flows and stocks, and trend growth are explained in How to read the tracker.
