What the numbers say
Short term
The latest readings- The latest figure is 2,962.05 tonnes for Aug 2026, down 43.2% on the same month a year earlier.
- In the first 8 months of 2026 the total was 31,634 tonnes, down 51.9% on the same stretch of 2025.
- Over the latest 12 months it came to 54,207 tonnes, down 33.8% on the 12 months before.
- The change on a year earlier averaged −44.5% over the last three months, against −44.8% in the three months before: the year-on-year pace is broadly unchanged.
Long term
The record as a whole- Trend growth over the past 10 years is 0.6% a year (least-squares fit on the logarithm; R² 0.01, a loose fit: the series has not followed a steady path, and this rate says little).
- Measured end to end, compound growth is -8.5% a year over five years and 1.8% a year over ten, on 12-month totals.
- The record high (12-month total) was 110,509 tonnes in the year to Oct 2006; the latest is 50.9% below it.
- The past five years include an exceptional swing in the annual growth rate, so no typical range is quoted.
- There is a regular seasonal pattern: over the last 5 full years the high point has been February and the low point July. Compare each month with the same one a year earlier, not with the one before.
How to read this series
Fisheries. Fish caught, fish bought by processors, and the volume exported, in metric tonnes. Catches swing with the season and the weather, so single months say little on their own.
- A flow: it measures activity during each month, and months add up to an annual total.
- Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.
Terms such as percentage points, flows and stocks, and trend growth are explained in How to read the tracker.
