What the numbers say

Short term

The latest readings
  • The latest figure is US$1.89 billion for 2025, up 0.6% on the year before.

Long term

The record as a whole
  • Trend growth over the past 10 years is 6.1% a year (least-squares fit on the logarithm; R² 0.38, a loose fit: the series has not followed a steady path, and this rate says little).
  • Measured end to end, compound growth is 20.7% a year over five years and 8% a year over ten.
  • The latest figure is the highest on record.
  • Year-on-year growth has typically varied by about 23.7 percentage points (one standard deviation) over the past five years.

How to read this series

Balance of payments. The full annual account of transactions with the rest of the world. The current account adds trade in goods and services to income and transfers; a deficit has to be financed by investment, borrowing or drawing on reserves, which the financial account records.

  • Shown in current prices (nominal). Part of any long-run rise reflects inflation rather than a larger real amount.
  • A flow: it measures activity during each year, and years can be compared directly.
  • MMA's series includes a figure for 2026, a period that has not ended. Treat it as an estimate or projection; it is drawn dashed and left out of every calculation above.
  • Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.

MMA’s note: Value of services acquired from non-residents

Terms such as percentage points, flows and stocks, and trend growth are explained in How to read the tracker.
