How to read this series

Balance of payments. The full annual account of transactions with the rest of the world. The current account adds trade in goods and services to income and transfers; a deficit has to be financed by investment, borrowing or drawing on reserves, which the financial account records.

  • Shown in current prices (nominal). Part of any long-run rise reflects inflation rather than a larger real amount.
  • A flow: it measures activity during each year, and years can be compared directly.
  • This series takes negative values (a deficit or a net outflow), so changes are given as amounts; a percentage change from a negative base has no meaning.
  • MMA's series includes a figure for 2026, a period that has not ended. Treat it as an estimate or projection; it is drawn dashed and left out of every calculation above.
  • Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.

MMA’s note: Balance on inflows and outflows of current transfers

Terms such as percentage points, flows and stocks, and trend growth are explained in How to read the tracker.
