How to read this series
Balance of payments. The full annual account of transactions with the rest of the world. The current account adds trade in goods and services to income and transfers; a deficit has to be financed by investment, borrowing or drawing on reserves, which the financial account records.
- A ratio to GDP moves with both parts. It can fall because GDP grew faster, without the underlying amount falling at all.
- Changes in a rate or ratio are given in percentage points, the plain difference between two readings.
- MMA's series includes a figure for 2026, a period that has not ended. Treat it as an estimate or projection; it is drawn dashed and left out of every calculation above.
- Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.
