What the numbers say
Short term
The latest readings- The latest figure is MVR 62 million for Jun 2026, down 5.8% from May 2026 and up 106.8% on the same month a year earlier.
- The change on a year earlier averaged +95.3% over the last three months, against +183.8% in the three months before: the year-on-year pace has eased.
Long term
The record as a whole- Trend growth over the past 7 years is -30.5% a year (least-squares fit on the logarithm; R² 0.15, a loose fit: the series has not followed a steady path, and this rate says little).
- Measured end to end, compound growth is -56.5% a year over five years.
- The record high was MVR 4.38 billion in Oct 2022; the latest is 98.6% below it.
- The past five years include an exceptional swing in the annual growth rate, so no typical range is quoted.
How to read this series
Domestic borrowing. Who holds the government’s domestic debt, and the treasury bills issued, repaid and outstanding each month. Treasury bills are short-term borrowing that must be rolled over, so the outstanding amount and its maturity mix show how much refinancing is always due.
- Shown in current prices (nominal). Part of any long-run rise reflects inflation rather than a larger real amount.
- A stock: it is the amount outstanding at the end of each month, not activity during it, so periods are never added together.
- Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.
Terms such as percentage points, flows and stocks, and trend growth are explained in How to read the tracker.
