What the numbers say

Short term

The latest readings
  • The latest figure is MVR 0 for Jul 2026.
  • In the first 7 months of 2026 the total was MVR 16.8 million, up 19.1% on the same stretch of 2025.
  • Over the latest 12 months it came to MVR 35.2 million, up 49.3% on the 12 months before.
  • The change on a year earlier averaged −100.0% over the last three months, against +6,156.6% in the three months before: the year-on-year change has turned negative.

Long term

The record as a whole
  • Trend growth over the past 8 years is 1.8% a year (least-squares fit on the logarithm; R² 0.00, a loose fit: the series has not followed a steady path, and this rate says little).
  • Measured end to end, compound growth is 2.5% a year over five years, on 12-month totals.
  • The record high (12-month total) was MVR 139.7 million in the year to Feb 2022; the latest is 74.8% below it.
  • The past five years include an exceptional swing in the annual growth rate, so no typical range is quoted.
  • There is a regular seasonal pattern: over the last 5 full years the high point has been May and the low point June. Compare each month with the same one a year earlier, not with the one before.

How to read this series

Expenditure and balance. What the government spends: recurrent spending (salaries, pensions, subsidies, interest and running costs) and capital spending (buildings, infrastructure, equipment). The overall balance is revenue minus this total; a negative figure is a deficit that has to be borrowed.

  • Shown in current prices (nominal). Part of any long-run rise reflects inflation rather than a larger real amount.
  • A flow: it measures activity during each month, and months add up to an annual total.
  • Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.

Terms such as percentage points, flows and stocks, and trend growth are explained in How to read the tracker.
