What the numbers say

Short term

The latest readings
  • The latest figure is MVR 2.37 billion for Q2 2026, up 11.8% from Q1 2026 and up 14.8% on the same quarter a year earlier.
  • In the first 2 quarters of 2026 the total was MVR 4.49 billion, up 6.3% on the same stretch of 2025.
  • Over the latest 12 months it came to MVR 8.82 billion, up 5% on the 12 months before.
  • The change on a year earlier averaged +6.5% over the last two quarters, against +3.7% in the two quarters before: the year-on-year pace has picked up.

Long term

The record as a whole
  • Trend growth over the past 10 years is -1% a year (least-squares fit on the logarithm; R² 0.04, a loose fit: the series has not followed a steady path, and this rate says little).
  • Measured end to end, compound growth is 6.9% a year over five years and 1.6% a year over ten, on 12-month totals.
  • The record high (12-month total) was MVR 10.52 billion in the year to Q4 2019; the latest is 16.2% below it.
  • Year-on-year growth has typically varied by about 10.3 percentage points (one standard deviation) over the past five years.

How to read this series

Quarterly national accounts. Output each quarter, in total and by industry, at constant prices. Compare a quarter with the same quarter a year earlier: tourism makes some quarters reliably busier than others. Gross value added (GVA) is output by industry; adding taxes on products and subtracting subsidies gives GDP at market prices.

  • Measured at constant prices, so changes reflect volumes rather than prices. The level depends on the base year; the growth rate is the meaningful reading.
  • A flow: it measures activity during each quarter, and quarters add up to an annual total.
  • Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.

Terms such as percentage points, flows and stocks, and trend growth are explained in How to read the tracker.

What is driving it

How much each component added to, or took from, the total’s growth on a year earlier.

Each bar segment is a component’s change over the year as a share of the total a year earlier, in percentage points; the segments add up to the line. Calculation by Good Morning Maldives from MMA data.
