STELCO has officially begun supplying electricity from the Kulhudhuffushi power station, bringing the northern city back under the company that first ran its power from 2003 to 2009.
At the handover on 15 October, Managing Director Ali Azwar raised the national flag at the station and Deputy Managing Director Aishath Muzna raised STELCO’s. The move follows the government’s decision, announced on 7 September, to bring Fenaka’s electricity services under STELCO.
Addu first
Kulhudhuffushi comes two weeks after STELCO took over Addu City’s electricity on 30 September. Its teams have since repaired an idle 800-kilowatt generator there and returned the generators at S. Hulhudhoo and S. Meedhoo to service, adding capacity to islands with a history of outages.
By the end of the month
STELCO has already taken on power stations across many northern atolls and is working through the rest, with Shaviyani next. “STELCO’s aim is to bring all power stations Fenaka was in charge of under the company by the end of the month,” Azwar said.
Planned outages and service notices are published on STELCO’s outage map.
