What the numbers say
Short term
The latest readings- The latest figure is 1.3 million bednights for Aug 2026, up 0.9% on the same month a year earlier.
- In the first 8 months of 2026 the total was 9.3 million bednights, up 0.9% on the same stretch of 2025.
- Over the latest 12 months it came to 13.8 million bednights, up 2.7% on the 12 months before.
- The change on a year earlier averaged +5.7% over the last three months, against −6.2% in the three months before: the year-on-year change has turned positive.
Long term
The record as a whole- Trend growth over the past 10 years is 6.9% a year (least-squares fit on the logarithm; R² 0.36, a loose fit: the series has not followed a steady path, and this rate says little).
- Measured end to end, compound growth is 13.9% a year over five years and 6.3% a year over ten, on 12-month totals.
- The record high (12-month total) was 13.9 million bednights in the year to Feb 2026; the latest is 0.5% below it.
- The past five years include an exceptional swing in the annual growth rate, so no typical range is quoted.
- There is a regular seasonal pattern: over the last 5 full years the high point has been December and the low point June. Compare each month with the same one a year earlier, not with the one before.
How to read this series
Capacity and stay. How long visitors stay and how full the beds are. Bednights are arrivals multiplied by length of stay; the occupancy rate is bednights as a share of the bed capacity in operation. Arrivals can rise while bednights lag if stays get shorter. Travel receipts are what visitors spend, in US dollars.
- A flow: it measures activity during each month, and months add up to an annual total.
- Recent periods are often revised as fuller data arrive. The version comparison below shows what MMA has changed since this site began keeping copies.
MMA’s note: Sum of the number of nights spent by each tourist
Terms such as percentage points, flows and stocks, and trend growth are explained in How to read the tracker.
What is driving it
