Prices & inflation: every series
How fast are prices rising?
is how much more the same shopping costs than a year before. Because rice, flour, fuel and most other goods are imported, world prices and shipping costs show up quickly on Malé’s shelves.
Inflation
How fast prices are rising, overall and for food, housing and transport.
The twelve-month change in consumer prices nationally, with the food, housing and transport components that most often drive it. A lower rate means prices are rising more slowly, not falling; only a negative rate means prices are lower than a year before.

The price index
The price level behind inflation, split by kind of spending.
The index itself and its thirteen spending divisions. The level has no meaning on its own (it is set to 100 in a base period); what matters is how fast it changes. Divisions carry different weights, so a large move in a small division barely shifts the total.
